Music is to the spirit as blood is to the body. It moves us, regulates us, gives energy and makes way for feeling. It rings in our memories from moments of joy and sadness. It is the catalyst for tears, laughs, and the embrace of another. The handlers of this mighty force are called Disc Jockeys. For Delmar Francois Dominique Graves, music is his life. Both his parents come from cities with deep musical history. His father from Detroit, MI and his mother New Orleans, LA. His passion for music was cultivated at a young age. His first love was Jazz, but this grew to encompass a love for hip hop and other genres of music as well. While other kids were buying shoes, clothes, and video games with their allowance money, he was buying CDs from his favorite artists. A few of his first CDs being Lupe Fiasco's, "Food & Liquor" and Panic! At the Disco's, "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out". Delmar's musical taste grew until he was knowledgeable on not just the songs but the real-life issues that the music spoke of and had been born from. The realization that each song was a story, a piece of art constructed out of deep intent, moved Delmar in a way he didn’t yet understand. Prior to DJing, he had been in fashion, designing and marketing his own clothing brand. But during this time, he had not felt whole or wholly himself. It wasn’t until college that he was challenged to do more with this passion for music. Through personal connections and self-initiative, he was introduced to a mentor, DJ Rashaad. Under this guiding eye Delmar learned the art of scratching and blending. These newfound skills alongside his natural ability for music selection brought forth a clearer vision of himself. In the same way a person who shows up to a club at eight o’clock doesn’t see it come to life until eleven, DJing brought Delmar awareness of his full potential. After a year of practicing and learning the craft, he was given the opportunity to step into the vision he now held of himself. He strode toward it with confidence performing authentic freestyled mixes at venues and events across Houston. He became more patient, giving, positive and outspoken each time he got behind the turn tables. He found purpose representing and celebrating black culture by way of a love for music. He continues to indulge in this purpose through his performances, sharing knowledge about pioneers in his field and by broadcasting his mixes outside of just events. Delmar’s skill of the art is worthy of standing alongside legends like DJ Screw, DJ Clark Kent, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and DJ R/Tistique to name a few and he’s still in his genesis. He maintains his pursuit of the art despite self-criticism through prayer, faith and an intentional effort to surround himself with positivity. As DJ Grav3 Digga, Delmar uncovers not only his own soul but the souls of all those musical geniuses that came before him. Curating the vibes of a generation one mix at a time.
